How To Redeem Your Family Name (Part 3)

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

Maybe you weren’t handed a spiritual legacy. Maybe addiction, anger, poverty, or shame run deep through your family line. But you don’t have to carry it forward.

You are not bound to what you were born into. By the grace of Jesus, you can start something new.

Jesus can set you free, and not just you, but your entire family. He can remove the shame, break the addiction, silence the anger, and rewrite your name. What was once a cycle of defeat can become a testimony of deliverance. You can overcome what you were brought up in.

Think of the sons of Korah. Their father rebelled against God and was swallowed by the earth, yet they were spared. Why? Because they chose differently. They stayed close to the altar, they served in the house of God, and they worshiped. Their legacy changed. They went from almost being forgotten to becoming the writers of psalms - songs like “As the deer pants for the water” and “Better is one day in Your courts.” Eleven chapters in the book of Psalms carry their name.

You might come from a family where no one prayed, where church was mocked, where pain was passed down. But you can say, “It stops here.” You can begin new family traditions. Prayer, fasting, forgiveness, generosity, worship, church. It’s not about perfection. It’s about making Jesus the center of your home. You don’t have to live out the lyrics of an old song like Hank Williams Jr. did - singing, “I’m just carrying on an old family tradition.” You can carry something else. You can carry grace. You can carry healing. You can carry the fire of the Holy Spirit into the next generation.

It starts at the altar, the place where Jesus gave His blood to redeem every house, every name, every sinner. That’s where shame breaks, where legacies shift, where hope begins.

So today, give your family to God. He’s not finished with your name. In fact, He’s just getting started. Pray today: “Jesus, thank You for the blood that breaks every curse. I give you my family, my past, and my future. Start something new in us. Let our name be known for worship, for love, and for faith in you. Amen.”
