He Goes With You
“For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He ponders all his paths.” Proverbs 5:21
Have you ever thought about the fact that Joseph was in the will of God, even when he was thrown into the pit? He was still in God’s will when he was incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. He was suffering an injustice, but God knew what He would do. Joseph couldn’t see it, but God was still doing it. God's always moving, even when we don’t understand.
In Genesis 22, God told Abraham, “Go to the mountain that I will show you.” Abraham didn’t even understand where he was supposed to be going. God said, “I’ll show you when you get there.” Abraham put his travel gear on and started moving. God later tells him to take a three-day journey to a mountain called Mount Moriah, and there God said, “Go up on that mountain and offer the boy you waited on for 25 years as a sacrifice to me.” So Abraham took that young man and climbed the mountain. That must have been the longest walk of Abraham’s life. Then the boy laid down on the altar and surrendered his life. He could have pushed the old dad away and said, “I’m not doing this,” but he laid down willingly. Abraham tied Isaac up, raised the knife, and was about to stab Isaac in the heart, and God said, “Don’t do it. The Lord Himself will provide a sacrifice.” God knew what He was doing. Abraham didn’t know, and Isaac didn’t know. They didn’t know God would provide the sacrifice they needed. They just trusted that God loved them and everything would be alright in the end.
Then, fast forward to the story of David in the Old Testament. In the middle of this story, in 1 Chronicles 21, the Bible says that David displeased the Lord by taking a census of the people of Israel, and 70,000 Israelites were killed in a plague. And David, in desperation, fell down and repented, and God told him, “Go to the threshing floor of Araunah.” What was that? It was a specific piece of property that a man named Araunah owned. And David went there, and he said, “Sell me that property.” And Araunah said, “I’ll just give it to you as a donation, and you can use it for God.” But David said, “No, I can’t offer God something that cost me nothing.” So David bought the land, built the altar, and burned the sacrifice, and God stopped the plague instantly. On this same mountain (Mount Moriah), his son, Solomon, would build the temple. Amazingly, this was also the exact spot where Abraham had raised a knife to offer Isaac! It was the same piece of real estate. They didn’t know. They were unconnected for centuries. They did not know what was going on. Abraham didn’t know David, but God knew what He was doing. Whether you can see it or not, everything you go through is interconnected in some way to God’s great plan for this world.
He’s a good God, and all things are working together for your good. God wants you to keep trusting, praising, and talking to Him even when you don’t know what will happen. In every one of their lives, they never had a clue, but He knew. He always has a plan.
